The Red Cockatoo and other songs
High voice
A collection of single songs stretching across the period 1935-1962, and first published in 1994. They are settings of poets from a typically eclectic group, including Britten's contemporaries Auden, Louis MacNeice and Peter Burra along with a translation of the 9th century Chinese poet Po-Chü-i and a German-language setting of Goethe's 'Mitternacht'. There is also an early setting of Williams Blake's 'The Poison Tree', which much later found its way - in an entirely different musical guise - into the Songs and Proverbs of William Blake.
