Benjamin Britten’s

Song Catalogue

6 Early Songs

Voice Piano

A fascinating group of songs from 1929-1931, first published in 2013. Most of them were composed during Britten's time at Gresham's school in Holt, but the two for bass voice ('The Moth' and 'Sport') were written while was attending the Royal College of Music. Britten did not revise them for publication himself, but had in 1961 considered them according to a list he generated in a notebook entitled 'Possible early horrors'. This list included 'Chamber Music', 'The Moth', 'Witches' song' and 'Diaphenia'.
